Before you installed the first Domain Controller of a new Windows Server Operating System (eg. Windows Server 2003 / Windows Server 2008 R2) you had to extend the AD Schema.

In Windows Server 2012, Microsoft has integrated the ADPREP forest and domain upgrades and DCPROMO domain controller promotion processes into one Active Directory Domain Service Configuration Wizard that takes care of everything.
If you add the “Active Directory Domain Services” role with the 2012 Server Manager, this wizard is started.
