imageWith the new Server Manager included in  Windows Server 2012 or in the RSAT tools for Windows 8 you have the possibility to easily manage the current (where Server Manager is running) or other Windows 2012 Servers. But it’s also possible to manager other “older” Windows Server Operating Systems like Windows Server 2008 or Server 2008 R2. But there, some extra steps are necessary on the “older target Server”.

When I started working with a Windows 8 (no touch) device, my first impression was, that more clicks were necessary to execute the same tasks as in Windows 7.

After a few weeks, when you know all the new and important keyboard shortcuts, you don’t need more clicks! You also need to know all the invisible hotspots in the corners and the menus which appear when hovering over them.  Take the time to learn these key combinations – it’s important – and makes you faster!

Before you installed the first Domain Controller of a new Windows Server Operating System (eg. Windows Server 2003 / Windows Server 2008 R2) you had to extend the AD Schema.

In Windows Server 2012, Microsoft has integrated the ADPREP forest and domain upgrades and DCPROMO domain controller promotion processes into one Active Directory Domain Service Configuration Wizard that takes care of everything.

If you add the “Active Directory Domain Services” role with the 2012 Server Manager, this wizard is started.

When you install Windows Server 2012 you can choose between

Server Core Installation and Server with a GUI.

imageThe good news is, that now, you have the possibility to choose between the two modes after the initial installation!

So you can install your server with a GUI, install the drivers for all the network adapters, configure them with the desired IP’s, enable remote Management, Remote Desktop, enable Windows Update and then at the end you can switch back to Server Core (by removing the features).
